Minister Cvetkovic’s interview to Ekonomist, June 9, 2008 - Attack on the Budget

At the peak of negotiations on the new coalition formation, public eye caught attention of Minister of Finance Mirko Cvetkovic’s warning that as early as autumn, if no bigger privatizations and increase of foreign investments inflow occur, Serbia could face problems caused by shortage of state treasury funds regulating public debt servicing. This statement caused worries of some politicians, mainly because of the fears that budget insolvency might jeopardize public sector salaries and pensions’ payments. That is not favorable at all, particularly keeping in mind that new parliament election option is not yet excluded. Minister Cvetkovic, however, in the interview for the Ekonomist magazine, claims that such danger is nonexistent and that budget will have sufficient funds for current expenditure financing.
